Celebrating ‘Raksha Bandhan’

‘This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.’ -  Elmer Davis

In this spirit, Ridge Valley School, Gurgaon invited soldiers from the Air Defence Corp as special guests on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.  Principal Mrs. Guneet Ohri & Academic Co-ordinator Mrs. Kamalpreet Bhullar gave a warm welcome to the soldiers.  Amidst loud applause from the students, Mrs. Guneet Ohri expressed how much we value what our soldiers do for us. She also told the students to imbibe the virtues of discipline, sacrifice and respect for the Motherland from the soldiers who shone in their immaculate olive green uniform.

As the sister loving ties the frangible thread of Rakhi onto her brother’s wrist and he vows to protect her, a strong bond is bolstered. The festival of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ comes adorned with this beautiful message. Raksha Bandhan is not only for meant for siblings, but for protection for any loved one. 'Raksha' means protection and 'bandhan' means bond. And when we vocalize these two words, how can we not think of our valiant soldiers who risk their lives to protect us! The toddlers presented hand-made rakhis to our guests which they took along for their fellow soldiers deployed on the borders, with a message of love and appreciation tucked in.

A skit was performed by the students of Grade 7 depicting the history behind the celebration of Rakshbandhan, how it started when Rani Karnavati asked for help from Emperor Humayun. The students understood the history behind this festival and also the importance of it being celebrated even today.
